Jon Rose is a
professional surfer from Laguna Beach, and was just offshore the Indonesian island of
Sumatra at the time of the magnitude 7.6 earthquake on September 30th. Upon coming ashore at Padang the following day,
Jon immediately set out to assist on the ground with water filters which were already
en route with him for a
Waves for Water humanitarian project in Bali, and
helped out with the local Red Cross in the days after the quake. Listen in as
Hansen and Tommy talk with
Jon about his experience.
Upon returning home,
Jon set about getting in touch with
Surfaid International, a non-profit humanitarian organization dedicated to improving the health, well-being, and self-reliance of people living in isolated regions of the world, all connected through surfing.
Surfaid International has already launched an
Emergency Response Appeal to help the people of Padang and Sumatra. Along with
Jon,
Surfaid's Program Director
Dr. David Lange was also in Padang at the time of the quake, and was nearly killed as he fled a collapsing hotel.
Surfaid International is holding an
Earthquake Relief Fundraiser this
Sunday, November 1st at the
Belly Up in
Solana Beach. Click

Mattson Two and the premiere screening of
