Festivus for the Rest of Us

George's dad brandishes a Festivus pole on a 1997 episode of Seinfeld.

If you're like Hansen and Tommy and are tired and fed up with the holidays, you'll be happy to know the holiday known as Festivus is quickly approaching. Ode to joy. The celebration dates to an episode of Seinfeld which aired during the show's final season on December 18, 1997, though according to Seinfeld, Festivus was first observed in 1965.

The minimalist holiday involves two or more people gathering around a pole or stick (usually aluminum) for an annual Airing of Grievances, at which time the person holding the pole tells others how they have fallen short or failed them over the past year. After a meal, participants wrestle the head of the household to the floor in what is known as the Feat of Strength. So if you're the head of the household, watch your back this Christmas season as you dive in for an extra helping of cookies and eggnog.
